Jim Martin's Guns

1905 Colt SAA - Bob Wills Commemorative

Jim selected a 1905 Colt SAA because it was the birth year of one of his favorite musicians, the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills.  Originally the Colt was pitted on the outside so he sent it Jim and Bill Adair in Carrollton, TX who reworked and case hardened the frame.  Bill Adair engraved the Texas Cattle brand design created by Jim and applied the rich, deep bluing to the rest of the gun.  Jim completely rebuilt the action and hand crafted the exquisite mesquite burl grips. The project took 4 years to complete.

3rd Generation Colt SAAs

Chambered in Jim's favorite caliber, 44-40, this pair of nickeled 3rd generation Colt SAAs are Jim's tribute to the great state of Arizona. He hand crafted the Wooly Mammoth Ivory grip and designed the engraving pattern selecting cattle brands from the famous working ranches of the south west.

1959 Colt SAA - California State Championship Prize

Jim was originally awarded a 4 3/4" .45 Colt SAA for winning the California State Championship.  Since his prefered Colt is a 7 1/2" 44 caliber single action the prize sponsor, Greens Sporting Goods, allowed Jim to exchange his prize for one that he would enjoy shooting.   Knowing Jim did not shoot wimpy loads famous Fast Draw gun builder, John Phillips, handcrafted a stainless steel cylinder for Jim as a welcome gift for him when he moved from California to Arizona.  Decades later Jim still really enjoys shooting this gun.

Colt pistols are one of a kind. These guns are made with the best effort to produce the highest quality possible. Colt revolvers, in my opinion, have the best design among others. In fact, I do have a collection of Colt guns in my arsenal at home though some of them are rusty. What my collection lacks is the 1905 Colt SAA. This blog first informed me of the model and I really want to have one of those shiny little pistols. Can you tell me where could I buy that model? Thank you very much for your reply.

Hello, I'd just like to say the Bob Wills gun is a really, really fine work of art and a fitting commemorative. I am myself very fond of Bob Wills, and was pleased to see this. Among the other works, there sure are proof of superb craftmanship - the Arizona 44 44-40 for example. I am also very fond of the grps. So, keep the good work up, and hope it is possible to buy grips from Sweden.

Best regards, BB

My dear, dear friend, Jim Martin's work never gets old. I've come to know that the grips (any grips) made by Jim Martin are the finest in the world. Jim can make grips/stocks out of just about anything and they always turn out to be some of the finest in the world today.

I am proud to know Jim, and he's become a very dear friend.

Nice work Jim, and God Bless You for the friendship you've shown to me all these years.

Bud

Just a question. Is the Colt saa 2nd gen frame the same for the 38 spl and the 357? And is it safe to change the 38 spl barrel and cylinder and make it a 357? Thank you.
